A healthier and more sustainable shopping basket

When doing a grocery shop and choosing what food and drink products to put into the shopping basket, there are lots of different things to consider. Aldi have worked with the experts at the British Dietetic Association to develop a shopping basket which meets healthy eating recommendations. It doesn’t need to break the bank either and can be done on a budget - check out our handy checklist at the bottom of this page for shopping tips.

Health tips

  • Opt for higher fibre and wholemeal versions of starchy carbohydrates where you can e.g. brown rice, wholemeal flatbreads
  • Look for lean cuts of meat and limit processed meat products
  • Introduce lower fat dairy foods and fortified plant alternatives like soya, oat or almond
  • Aim for at least 2 portions of fish per week, including 1 portion of oily fish which is a source of omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D
  • Eat more plant sources of protein such as pulses and beans, and a handful of nuts and seeds. Consider adding mycoprotein or soya mince to meals
  • Stay hydrated - drink around 6-8 glasses of liquid a day. Water, sugar free drinks, tea and coffee all count
  • Choose different colours of fruit and vegetables like peppers, berries, spinach and sweetcorn
